It's three minutes after ten, and you are listening to James O'Brien on LBC, where we find

ourselves contemplating an absolutely incredible vista of news stories involving misdemeanors,

alleged misdemeanors, impropriety and power. Both types of power, of course, political power,

as evinced by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is now under investigation for a relationship with a second woman who may have

represented a conflict of interest during his time as mayor of London. This woman actually did give birth to one of his children, one of the children that we are allowed to know about and talk about.

And, of course, the other type of power, which is hereditary, unearned, and

almost entirely built in some cases, but not all, upon an utterly unjustified sense of

entitlement, a phrase that leads us inexorably towards His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew.

Should we pause there for a minute? His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew.

I think you mellow generally as you get older, if you're lucky.

If you're unlucky, of course, then your disappointments and bitterness curdle to create

something truly hideous.

But those of us blessed with a warm world view, mellow usually as we get older.

I guess we can get angry about injustice and inequality.

But the royal family, if you're in your 40s, your late 40s in my case, it often feels a little bit undergraduate to get on your high horse about the royal family. It's a little bit presumptuous of me there, of course, with the idea that everybody goes to university. It's a little bit sixth form. Well, of course not everybody goes into the six form. It's a bit immature to get on your high horse about the royal family. I'm not saying it is. I'm just telling you that to me, that's how it began to feel. I think that's part of the problem, actually. That's like gaslit nation, 101, isn't it? It's always been there, therefore, there can't be anything fundamentally wrong with it. Of course, if we subscribe to that worldview, we'd still be sending children up chimneys. And slavery would never have been.

Well, we've always done that.

How dare anyone come along and put a cat amongst the proverbial pigeons?

It's tradition, it's convention, it's normal.

It really isn't, is it?
