Summary

This week, Jameela dives into what’s at stake in this year’s US Election with NYU Professor, author and podcaster Melissa Murray (Crooked Media’s Strict Scrutiny) who runs through the grim reality of Project 2025, what the media hasn’t covered from Supreme Court rulings, and how reproductive rights could be further restricted. Despite the harrowing landscape, Melissa outlines how ‘violence against women’ policies can be reestablished, how we can protect LGBTQIA+ rights, and what a Supreme Court reformation looks like. She also reminds us about our voting rights and what we learn about civics, plus plenty more. Listen to Melissa on Strict Scrutiny where you listen to your podcasts and follow her on IG @profmmurray

Now I know that we normally stick to mental health issues, but when it comes to politics,

0:09.3

specifically what's happening in the United States of America, it feels adjacent to mental health

0:13.9

given that the outcome of this election will significantly impact how everyone is going to

0:19.6

feel. And so whether you're in the United States or not, I think a lot of us are very interested because the leader of the USA,

0:28.0

chosen in November, is going to have a massive knock-on effect across the entire world and also across the media and

0:35.2

social media and I don't know about you but I'm finding the discourse very splintered and

0:40.2

very divisive and it just tends to be a bit of a cluster fuck of divided opinions and people on the left

0:46.4

can't agree with each other and people on the right can't agree with each other and

0:48.8

centrist arguing with each other and there's so many barking opinions online and very few of those opinions are held by

0:56.1

people who actually know exactly what they're talking about and it's very rare that they speak with

1:00.4

full context and history and it's very very rare that people zoom out and

1:05.0

look at the bigger picture. It is a crisis of this generation the way that we focus on

1:09.1

just the now and while I see why that's beneficial because then we put pressure on the right people,

1:14.0

it also means that we just don't seem to have a fucking plan.

1:17.0

We don't have a cohesive plan that we can all generally agree on.

And when it comes to the presidential nominee, there is obviously for the liberals,

1:26.0

there is obviously a lot of uproar because she's not everyone's ideal favorite candidate,

1:31.0

but people are so focused on what's wrong with her that they're forgetting

1:35.7

to focus on what's wrong with the opposition.

1:39.2

And so in today's episode, I wanted to invite on an expert who's so much smarter than me who's got so much

1:45.1

experience in not only understanding American law and also understanding American
