0:10.8	I'm Jensen Holt McNair. If I asked you what a proverb was, you'd probably have
0:16.7	an answer. Yes, Proverbs is a book of the Bible, but a proverb is not strictly a biblical thing.
0:24.0	The dictionary definition is that a proverb is a short pithy saying in general use,
0:30.0	stating a general truth or piece of advice. Now with that definition in mind you might assume
0:36.7	that the book of proverbs in the Bible is just full of a bunch of proverbs
0:41.1	telling you general truths and pieces of advice from God.
0:45.0	But like all books of the Bible, there's so much more going on.
0:48.6	In like all books of the Bible, it's vital that we understand the themes, direction, and key components of the Book of Proverbs
0:56.3	before we ever start reading it.
0:58.3	See, the Book of Proverbs is not merely a compilation of a bunch of pieces of advice from God.
1:05.2	There is a large section of the book dedicated to a large collection of Proverbs,
1:11.1	but there are also sections of a father giving advice to his son, sections
1:15.8	where wisdom herself personified as a woman teaches us about wisdom.
1:21.9	You see more than just a compilation, the book of Proverbs works as a whole
1:27.0	to give us a guide to living well in God's kingdom. It's a book formed by The Ancient Wisdom of Israel, the truths and advice that they held as a people of how to live as God's people under his covenant.
1:41.0	The entire book as a whole is helping us get a better picture
1:45.5	of what the life of a believer should look like, should be guided by if they are
1:50.4	striving to live by God's ways and not the worlds.
1:55.0	Now, one thing that the dictionary definition does help us out with
1:59.5	is understanding what the book of Proverbs is not.
2:03.6	And this is going to be very, very important to us
