Summary

Wowzers! Kat and Nadia are one episode away from the big 3-0-0! Despite being on the cusp of a momentous occasion, they decide to chill out this week and talk about action RPGs. What makes a good action RPG? How has the genre evolved from its earliest and most popular titles? Why are some RPG fans (Kat) a little salty about action RPGs’ very existence? The answers to these mysteries and more lie within. Also in this episode: There’s a whole lot of news about the state of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Nier: Automata is finally getting fixed on the PC, and the March Madness match-ups are getting real spicy in a real hurry. Welcome to another episode of Acts of the Blood God and independent RPG podcast.

I'm your host, Kat Bailey.

0:22.0

Joining me, as always, my lovely co-host, Nadia Oxford.

0:25.2

Hello, Kat.

0:26.0

It's nice to see that there is a little bit of spring in the air over in this very frigid, cold moonscape I call home.

0:32.9

How are things over there?

0:34.5

Is that what candidate is?

0:35.6

A frigid, cold moonscape? Things tend to get turned into like kind of

0:39.0

a real like bleak moonscape around February where there's just perpetual flurries and snow banks

0:45.0

everywhere and that's finally starting to dissipate and we're starting to see some hope. It's been one

0:49.5

year since the pandemic, Nadia. I was just saying on Twitter, I cannot believe that the U.S. Canada border

0:56.5

has been shut down tight for a year because I remember when it shut down for a day on 9-11.

1:02.3

And that was just, that was worth a freak out of its own because it was just inconceivable to even

1:07.2

consider. Thoughts and prayers to our good friend, Bob Mackie, who's been trying to get to

1:12.6

Canada for the past year and just had a hard time of it. Poor guy. Talk about bad timing. I understand

1:18.4

if he's going through having, you know, an American husband who is an expat and we had to go through

1:23.1

the whole rigmarole. And things have definitely changed since then, but the addition of a pandemic does not

1:30.2

help matters. I'm glad he at least got to go and visit his fiance, which is nice.

1:35.6

That is nice. So Nadia, let's talk about RPGs this week. We are going to be talking about

1:41.1

action RPGs. It's a topic that's come up a time or two on this podcast, but as we head into the next generation,

1:48.3

and with action adventure RPGs being so dominant, I think it's worth talking about what we want to see out of action RPGs,

1:57.1

what makes a good action RPG, what makes a bad action RPG? And how they can retain the spirit of the genre we love while also, you know, hooking in all those mainstream people who are just discovering why RPGs are so great. Before we get to that, a little bit of housekeeping, if you enjoy the podcast, thank you very much.
