Summary

Colorado-born elite runner turned entrepreneur David Perry is here—a guy who went from captain of Adidas Runners NYC to founder of one of the most talked-about jewelry brands in the athletic world.

David gained notoriety in the NYC running community before founding his own luxury jewelry brand, David Perry Jewelry. He was an All-America runner at the University of Portland, where he competed in Cross Country and Track & Field.

As a middle-to-long-distance specialist, he has times like 3:45.61 in the 1500m and 23:18 in the 8,000m under his belt. Post-collegiately, he became a captain for Adidas Runners NYC, while staying heavily involved in the city's running culture. Although he set out in 2018 to make the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials and failed to do so in 2020, his ambition is nothing to frown at; he also signed Olympic gold medalist Grant Holloway as the brand's first-ever ambassador in 2024.

From the trails of Colorado, to the roads of New York City, to the Olympic stage in Paris, David Perry's journey is proof that your biggest ambitions don't always look the way you planned them. He set out to make the Olympic Marathon Trials. Instead, he built a brand that made it to the Olympics anyway.

Ladies and gentlemen, my conversations with people who used to be excellent runners but are now crushing in business or life are some of my favorite, because the lessons we learn in running directly trans over to how we respond to life, how we view

life, how successful we are in life. And so when I met David Perry in New York City while

at an event for Nike and I heard about David Perry jewelry, his jewelry company that is state

of the art and one of the fastest up-and-coming jewelry companies in the world while also working still within the sport of running at times. I was like, I got to get this guy on the podcast. If you're unfamiliar with David, he used to run for the University of Portland, I think is what they call it, but Portland, UP. And back in the day in high school, he ran for Nywatt High School before they were all that

they are today and was one of the best in the state in the state of Colorado. He was a legend in

1:15.9

college then went on to work with Ditas and then he started David Perry Jewelry. This conversation

is wide ranging from his running years, what running needs to him. The biggest disappointment

and heartbreak in the sport and closing up his career to David Perry Jewel jewelry and all that he's doing to really take over that space while also still having a foot in the sport of running. I love this conversation. If you enjoy it, give us a five-star review. It takes three to five seconds to do so, but helps us out a lot. The other thing you can do is subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss more excellent conversations like this one. We release a new episode every other day. So subscribing keeps you up to date when we release a new episode. And then my final ask for you is sharing the podcast, today's episode or a different one with a friend, a family member, a teammate, someone who you think would find value and benefit from it. I appreciate you all. I love you all. Thank you. Thank you so much for being a part of this community. It means the world. I'm trying to grow this place. I'm trying to grow this archive

of the greatest stories in this part of running. And today is a beautiful one with Mr. David Perry.

2:11.8

David Perry, welcome to the podcast. What was the first piece of jewelry you ever remember receiving or getting?

2:20.7

I mean, the first piece of jewelry really notably was the first gold chain I bought,

2:26.9

which was a two millimeter 14-carat gold rope chain that was like all my money. And I was 20

2:33.4

living in New York. and I still have it

2:35.8

to this day. Wow. So 20 years old was when you first bought it. Yeah. Yeah. I think like having no money,

2:42.1

making the wrong decision, buying gold chain, but feeling like this was like, you know, this

2:46.6

inevitable piece of my character that I needed is obviously, I mean, now it's the best decision I made. Well, we'll talk about this in a little bit, but you ran for Portland back in the day. And before we kicked out this podcast, we were talking about the names that you're on the team with, like Scott Fobble, you know, Woody Kincaid, the guys who competed against like Jared Ward, if I called Woody right now and put him on speakerphone, like, would he,
