How would you describe success? It's a question that I was recently asked by a follower named Simon. How would you describe success? Well,

years ago, I worked as a chaplain at a hospital. I will never forget a visit with a gentleman who

was nearing the end of his life. He shared that he'd run

his own business and it had become incredibly successful. Yet for years, decades actually,

his highest priority was only on growing that business, growing top line revenue and bottom line

profitability. He shared that he'd lost his family as a result of long hours away from home

and inattention to what was actually going on at home.

He also shared that his health had deteriorated due to his intense travel

and constant stress professionally, which tuned him into alcohol and smoking for relief. Then he shared something

that I will always remember. John, I've gotten to the end of my life, and I realized that the

ladder I've been climbing my entire life was leaning against the wrong wall. So Simon and listeners,

I have some specific goals that my children and my finances

and in my health and in my marriage, business, charitable giving, hours spent serving, and vacation

time spent with my family. But I could set aside all of those tactical goals and boil success

down to this simple quote from scripture. Here it is.

Seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. It's a quote, almost 2,700 years old now,

and I think it still plays. Seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. That definition of

success that I have, it may offend you or it may ignite you,

but that's the thing. The very notion of success is extremely personal. It's unique to each one of us.
