Summary

Kyle hosts social media star, writer & podcaster Evan Ross Katz this week to chat about Mike White dubbing him the “Most Valuable Hypeman In the History of Television,” Evan’s eternal love for Sarah Michelle Gellar & Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and what makes some shows–like Twin Peaks and SATC–timeless. The two delve into Evan’s creative aspirations, how they handled their teen years, Evan’s approach to interviewing & dream subjects, and the power of connecting & listening. Kyle scores an invite to Evan’s next Chaos Dinner & gets the tea on why plus ones aren’t allowed before testing Evan’s fandom with lines from his favorite TV shows in a segment called Who EVAN Said That? Don’t miss Kyle answer Evan’s questions about And Just Like That and details on his upcoming projects!

You have the title of the most valuable hype man in the history of television.

0:37.4

I think Mike White, is he the one who gave youiker. He did, yes. That's pretty awesome. I don't hate it. What's funny, though, is I don't think it was intentionally something that he said that would be out there. He said it in a, this is like a one of those stories, but he recorded a video for me that he gave to Katie Couric because Katie Couric was interviewing me and she played it for me as a surprise. Oh my God. And he said that in the video and the moment I heard that I was like, well, that's going on the rest of me. That's how I want to be referred to now. Yes. Because I feel like it encapsulates how I like to see myself, which is ultimately like fanboy, like hype man, like a person who gets behind the thing and cheerleads.

Yeah, because I like to see myself, which is ultimately like fanboy, like hype man, like a person who gets

behind the thing and cheerleads. Yeah, well, because it comes from passion. I mean, I know that you

have Buffy on the sweatshirt, which is your... My show. Yeah. Have you seen Buffy? I saw early,

early episodes when it first aired. And I was like, oh, this is interesting because it was a different approach. You know, and I was like, oh, I loved it. But then I sort of went on to other things, but I know you stuck with it. And like it became a really important part of who you are. Yeah, I mean, I feel like, okay, well, first of all, I think there are similarities between the fandoms of Twin Peaks and Buffy to Vampires later. Oh, interesting, okay. And I think that they're... I'm really interested in like the ephemeral quality of certain art, and I feel like in the case of Twin Peaks and also with Buffy, these are these shows that sort of exist in some way decades later. Yeah. And there are so many really popular shows of their time

that more or less get forgotten.

2:05.6

And so I feel really lucky in the fact that

2:07.6

Buffy was the first show that I discovered

2:09.6

that really connected a lot of dots for me

2:12.6

about life and the kind of person I wanted to be

2:15.6

and there being a world outside of the one that I had been born into and the kind of person I wanted to be and there being a world outside of the one
