So as we digest the first few weeks of Trump's foreign policy, one could say that the biggest

news, or at least the noisiest news, has had to do with allies. Think of how Washington's

relationship with Europe seems to be at a

crossroads. Remember the Oval Office spat with Ukraine Zelensky? Or think of Mexico and Canada,

America's two biggest trading partners, which have had to go through immense turbulence on tariffs.

All this news about Europe, Mexico, Canada, the Middle East even,

but not as much about China. Why? Now this could easily change. Trump has called his first

spate of tariffs on China, the initial 10%, that is, an opening salvo, which hints at a lot more

to come. And indeed, there are factions within

the Trump White House that want more aggressive action. When will that happen? And in what

form? And at what cost? More broadly, what do we know so far about what Trump wants regarding

China? What is his China strategy? I wanted to speak with

someone this week who was a China scholar, but also involved in the process of policymaking.

And so we invited Rush Doshi on the program. Rush was one of the architects of the Biden administration's

China policy, partly because of his role,

as Deputy Senior Director for China and Taiwan on the National Security Council,

but also because of his 2021 book, The Long Game,
