It was frightening.

That was Bruce Springsteen at Arizona State University about the election in 1980.

Springsteen was responding, as many people were, to the election of a person who had radically

different and more conservative ideas than the election of a person who had radically different and more conservative

ideas than the mainstream of American politics, generally speaking, even the mainstream

of his own party, who in little quips had attacked welfare queens and people living off government handouts who had attacked government.

Washington is the problem, not the solution, was his refrain.

People had great fear.

At the same time, the country was suffering from high inflation and a depression that would

continue into his

term. Also, Reagan was a movie actor. And there was definitely a feeling at the time that maybe he wasn't

serious and we'd enter this new time of instead of electing serious people. Previous president

dark album called Nebraska.
