This presentation, like a sermon, we'll have a Bible text.

In fact, a kind of double text, because it's actually Paul in 1 Corinthians 2,

quoting Isaiah.

So I get to the Old Testament reading and the New Testament reading all in one by the New Testament,

quoting the Old Testament.

What no saw eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God is prepared

for those who love him. I think Paul is warning us that we should not presume too much

when we think what heaven will be like, that we can know what it is. What heaven will be is what

no eye has seen, no ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived.

We should expect to be surprised. Now, I think we should expect the surprises to be good surprises.

There won't be bad surprises. But it will be better than we can imagine. That has to be a kind

of rule. There should be a kind of limit of our speculation

about what the saints will in fact do in heaven. I should note that what I'm going to do here,

unlike earlier presentations, I am not a philosopher. I am a straightforward, old-fashioned

theologian. I will be thinking about the faith from inside the faith,

calling upon the sources of the faith, and the norms of the faith. So this is relatively

dogmatic theology in a certain sense. What foundations can we appeal to so that in thinking about

the saints in heaven, we're not engaged in sheer arbitrary speculation.

There are two possible foundations.

One is revelation.

What God has told us.

And by this, inevitably one means mostly scripture,
