Summary

For decades, if you wanted to find out how much an MP was earning on top of their £84,000 basic salary, you'd need to study dozens of entries in several editions of the register of members interests.

All of this information was clouded in opaque language and difficult for most voters to access. Now, Sky News and our partners at Tortoise Media have been working to change that, so we can all follow the flow of money through our political system.

On the Sky News Daily, host Niall Paterson heads into Westminster with deputy political editor Sam Coates and political producer Tom Larkin to take a closer look at exactly how much MPs are earning in their second jobs.

You can take a look at the database yourself by clicking here.

Do you know what? I have to say, I think MPs earn a decent wage, even in the midst of

0:09.8

cost of living crisis. Their basic, well, it's around about £84,000 a year. But for that,

0:16.6

they are expected to put in a little bit of hard grafts. They are generally in Westminster from

0:21.7

the beginning of the week until Thursday, perhaps even Friday morning when they return to the

0:25.7

constituencies and at least spend some of their weekend dealing with the surgery work, the individual

0:32.2

problems that constituents can raise. I have to say at this point, however, that 84,000 is certainly not the uppermost limit to what MPs can raise. Now, I have to say at this point, however, that 84,000 is certainly not the uppermost

limit to what MPs can earn. They can also have second jobs, perfectly proper, so long as they

0:46.8

make it obvious what that job is. Similarly, they can get money given to them by donors. Again,

0:52.6

nothing wrong with that, but of course, people will be

0:55.3

questioning who those donors are and why they've given them money. Now, as already mentioned,

1:00.7

members of Parliament, they're allowed to do other work. They are allowed to accept donations.

But they've got to record it and they've got to record it in a way that is not necessarily

1:08.9

always immediately accessible by the public.

But now, Sky News, along with Tortoise Media, have made a giant database where you can get

1:17.5

all of that information in the one place.

1:20.1

I'm Neil Patterson.

1:21.3

And over the next three episodes of the Sky News Daily, I'm going to be joined by Sky's

1:24.7

Deputy Political Editor Sam Cote.

1:26.7

Say hi, Sam.

1:44.6

I like that. And our politics producer, Tom Larkin. Hello. Now, they've been trawling through the data to find Westminster's top earners, the secret of donors, and also to try and shine just a little bit of light on that pre-existing problem in Parliament with transpansy. Now, you might have already heard about the database.
