Wednesday night edition of the pod western conference offseason grades time which is always interesting considering that over the last few episodes we've

0:09.0

regraded the 2016 offseason base on what we know now and the biggest thing that I was struck by here is I don't know about you and we can talk about this obviously I didn't have any

0:21.2

straight a's and I only had one f so it seemed like really in the west especially this year not that much change and then the one team that

0:29.3

where they did get the big stuff right you know some of the other stuff they got wrong so it's hard to give them NA but you want to just get right rolling here with the Dallas Mavericks sure we can do that so Dallas had a very eventful offseason they moved up in the draft giving up their 2019 projected first to get Luca Donsich they moved from five to three they signed DeAndre Jordan on that one year contract then they also drafted three guys in the second round signed Ryan Brokoff and then retain Dirk and Salah Mejri while

0:59.3

losing Seth Curry Doug McDermott Neurles Noel Yogi Farrell and Kyle Collins worth so a lot going on there and I framed my my thinking about this offseason in terms of two bets so one bet was Luca Donsich and that is a bet I support I think I thought he was the best player in this draft I should say I think it's done

1:16.7

on the one that I think that's going to be I'm looking for a definitive pronunciation and that's one I support it I think he was the best player in this class wonderful fit with Dennis Smith offensively and defensively hopefully they can make it work then the other bet is the value of having space in 2019 they kept flexibility kind of like we talked about in the regrade last year they kept their powder dry for the most part by signing DeAndre Jordan and I'm more mixed on that.

1:40.8

I think if you're going to say they were going to limit themselves solely to one year contracts difficult to argue that anyone who is available who would have signed a one year contract would have helped them more than DeAndre Jordan maybe Trevor or Lisa you could say potentially I mean they do really need some who can defend on the wing although they have West Matthews in that role at least for one more year but you can never have too many wings of course that they did need a starting center Jordan of course it in the apple of their eye for a long time a guy who I think is a little bit over the back of the game

2:10.8

overrated and so I think there's discussion of well you know this could be a one year trial and then maybe something long term could happen next summer and at any kind of a market price I don't think that I would be too interested in DeAndre Jordan going into his early 30s so I think the Jordan thing was okay but the question to me and we can talk about Don Shich too but the question to me is would they have been better off trying to get someone on maybe a slightly longer term deal

2:39.7

we renowned some of that 20 or 28 19 cap space and seen if they could add to this core around Smith and Dunsters because they desperately need someone who can defend on the wing maybe that player wasn't available in free agency this year I'm not sure that player is available in free agency next year such players are few and far between

2:59.7

yeah that's a big challenge and I think that there just weren't really the right guys I mean the restricted market in particular like they you know Aaron Gordon would have been interesting there you and I had talked about that fit when we did their offseason preview and I don't think they would have got him I mean look you look at the price that Orlando said and of course that would have used a lot of their space you know like Marcus smart I think his limitations would have been a big problem for them and you want to look on the young side too because these I mean Dallas to me their core are these two guy one

3:29.7

and his early 20s one I believe Lucas still in his teens and players like that players that young don't really hit unrestricted for agency very often and KCP would have been fascinating there but I think the fit you know like that if they're giving him multiple years I would have been a little bit

3:44.1

questionable and then for one year ago because makes a lot more stuff because Luca he's got to play either probably the two they hide him somewhere or the four I think long term your biggest concern about building the team unit

3:55.6

with Luca and if Dennis Smith become what we want them to be offensively that doesn't look like a great defensive tandem and so KCP well I could have been helpful maybe you play Luca at the four in your long term life then you get another three KCP

4:09.9

really isn't big enough to guard three and so do you want to make a big investment at the two like that I mean KCP does have the the ability to guard some ones as well which could have been useful I think you could have been a useful player but I understand the idea of all right we don't want to give up on flexibility

4:25.0

for the potential big score just for someone like KCP who is a solid player but especially at this nascent level of their development may not have been a difference maker for them over the next few years

4:35.8

right and a similar kind of story with Clint Kepela I think that would have been an interesting use of their money would have made life a little bit harder on the rockets depending on where Dallas's defensive theory goes Kepela could have been a really wonderful fit and having these good passers like having a pick on real big at the early in their careers would have been pretty awesome

4:52.8

but you know again it's the opportunity cost of losing everything else so I it's not a terrible thing to do I actually they could have gone with a little bit more value out of the very end of their stuff like getting guys for minimum contracts on multiple years or at least team options or non guarantees getting a little bit better that would have been a pretty badly also

5:12.4

oh yeah I wrote that I wrote that man it's like not only Yogi Ferrell but Seth Curry remember like when we thought Seth Curry had a two year deal with a player option I went a little bit more like okay you know I understand why Dallas may not done that but either one of those guys on one year deals basically or even a two minus one in Yogi Ferrell's case that was basically no opportunity cost for the Mavericks as things for them

5:31.7

really bird rights on him I mean there's the idea that maybe they didn't want to use his qualifying offer and keep that on the books remember they rescinded his qualifying offer shortly before deadline but then they were going to

5:43.1

resign him to something slightly below that I didn't really see the point of it being slightly below that when you know they really could have thrown him a bone and paid him just a little bit more

5:52.4

and that's when he ended up with in Sacramento and they're really and even going into next year with the non guarantee if you know the 3 million or so

5:59.3

and I think they they really could use for they did bring back Devon Harris as well to play some backup point guard for them they do have donchets they do as Smith they still
