Summary

A vital component of wellness is taking care of our mental health. But mental wellness is more than just drinking water, doing yoga, and going for a walk. Author and podcaster Allison Raskin has lived most of her life with diagnosed mental illness.  By navigating her mental health journey over the years, she’s been able to find community and humor through her diagnoses, particularly by writing about her experience with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. On this week’s episode of Well, Now – navigating wellness while living with mental illness. You're listening to Well Now Slate's podcast on Health and Wellness. I'm Kavita Patel.

And I'm Maya Feller. So a real vital component of wellness is really taking care of our mental health.

0:17.1

Kavita, you and I have talked so much about what wellness is and what it isn't.

0:22.9

And I think that every time we have this conversation, a new piece comes to mind for me.

0:29.2

When we hear people talking about mental health and mental wellness, I know for me, for sure,

0:35.0

that I know it's more than just drinking water or going for a walk or

Organization, live with a diagnosed mental disorder. So we're not talking about something that's rare or unusual. It's everywhere.

1:14.0

And when you think about how many people we just have in our household, Maya, just under our

1:18.3

roofs, there's a chance that one of us has something. So, and I certainly know that this affects

1:23.8

me personally. I think we're going to try to talk about that. That's why it was important

1:28.0

for us to try to find someone that could have a conversation with us, not just about what

1:33.4

being well means in the context of mental health, but how you live, have relationships,

1:39.6

and just have a life with mental illness. You know, Kavita, I'm really interested in the idea of bringing

1:46.1

this conversation into the mainstream. Just as you said, there's so many people that are

1:51.2

either living with or know someone that is navigating a mental health challenge, but yet

1:58.8

it's not openly discussed. And I feel like that does, like,

2:02.7

society at large, a significant disservice. So I'm very much looking forward to this conversation
