Summary

Hosts Dan Bardell and George Elek are joined by bet365's Steve Freeth to preview Man City v Liverpool: Round 2... Have the odds swung in Liverpool's favour after their respective Champions League exploits? Similarly, are Spurs now in total control of the race for Top 4 or can Brighton and someone like Enock Mwepu do the double in North London?

Plus, whether Vieira has a plan for crestfallen Chelsea after their cruel Champions League exit and The Athletic's George Caulkin explains what it's been like to support Newcastle, six months on from the takeover.

Hello and welcome to the weekend preview on the Athletic Football podcast sponsored by Bet365.

0:24.3

I'm Dan Bardell here with my co-host, George Ehrlich, and Bet365 Steve Freeth, as we look to preview

0:30.3

the best of the weekend's Premier League action and the small matter of two FA Cup

0:34.3

semi-finals as well.

Eric Ten Haag has agreed to deal in principle with Manchester United

0:39.7

to become their next manager in the summer

0:41.4

as exclusively revealed by the athletics David Ornstein earlier this week.

0:46.2

Steve, I'll come to you first.

0:47.7

Is that the right choice?

0:49.2

Can I sit on the fence and say that time will tell?

0:52.1

Sure.

I personally, I would have gone for Pocitino. I think obviously the PSG gig is, I know you look at that front three and think, well, this job's easy. I'd imagine it's quite hard to manage those egos there. And Ten Haag, of course, he's won a couple of championships in the Netherlands. I think he's long odds on to win a third one as well, as well as some cups. And I'm just waiting to see how, you know, it'll go down in that dressing room. I'm quite excited also to see how he does over here. He's come from a well-run club, as we talked about, you know, going to Manchester United this time. Will he play some young players? we've seen James Garner do particularly well as George would be well aware at Nottingham Forest this season. Will he be getting a sniff? Will Ronaldo go in the summer? Some big names could be leave from that dressing room, Pogbaar, Lingard, Mata. So I'm interested to see how this Manchester United side will look next season. We still rate them as fourth favourites, Dan, and they'll be around 6 to 4 to win a trophy under 10 Hague. So we still fancy the biggest trophy rate in 40 years to continue next season. Yeah, it's actually a really good piece on The Athletic at the moment by Jack Pittbrook, looking at Poticheno and what's potentially next for him after missing out on the Manchester United gig. George, which of the current squad is this good or bad news for? Is anyone it really benefits except for the obvious Donnie Vanderbache when he returns from his loan spell? Yeah, you'd think it probably would. At least be good news for him. Although knowing the way that Vanderbake's career has gone so far at United, you wouldn't be too surprised to him still sold in the summer.

But you think it would be good news for him.

2:20.5

You know, we don't know at this stage.

2:23.1

The interesting thing that isn't necessarily good news is you look at the way that Tenag has built this Iax side.

2:30.2

And he has often kind of recruited.

2:34.0

And I know that he, of of course isn't in charge of the

2:36.2

recruitment at Iax but a lot of his key players have been senior players you know you look at

2:41.3

the recruitment of Sebastian Halle, you look at Dusan Tadich who came in to players who came in

2:45.7

from mid-table sides in the Premier League you look at Dali Blint as well you know he isn't necessarily

2:50.2

a manager who's going to
