An insider claims a big social media company ignores harmful effects.

Here are the words of a former safety engineer at Meta. We cannot trust them with our children.

Arturo Behar told a Senate hearing yesterday that in his view the parent company of

Facebook and Instagram developed a culture he described as Hear No Evil, see No Evil when it comes to content

that could harm the mental health of young people.

Arturo Behar spent years at Meta working to reduce harmful content, but he was the experiences

of his own teenage daughter, once she joined Instagram, that convinced him the company was

falling short.

She and her friends began having awful experiences, including repeated on wanted sexual advances,

harassment. She reported this incidents to the company and it did nothing.

Behar says Meta maintains a narrow definition of what it considers harmful material

which its automated systems are required to remove.

Algorithms are as good as their inputs.

So if you don't allow a child to be, oh, that is gross, it makes me uncomfortable.

How do these systems, like even have a hope of addressing these issues?

Meta points to more than 30 tools created to support teens and their families,

but Behar dismissed many of the company's efforts as safety features in

name only and said new regulations are needed to compel change at social media companies.
