In an epic spoilercast that lasts almost—but not quite—as long as the film itself, Austin, Rob, and Danielle dig deep into the world of Blade Runner 2049. There are no holds barred here, as they go into the cinematography, politics, race and gender issues and deeply individual reads of the movie, along with a little dose of everyone’s history with the series.
So strap into your spinner (or, uh, audio device) and prepare for a long, spoiler-y journey into Los Angeles, 2049.

0:00.0 | What's good internet it is not Monday. It's not Monday. It's Tuesday, October 31st, and you're listening to Waypoint 101. |
0:24.0 | This is not the Waypoint 101 you think it is. It is not our second Wolfenstein episode. You can tell that because one Patrick Clepick is not joining us today. Instead it is me. It is Daniel Rienda. |
0:36.0 | Hi, hi. |
0:37.0 | And it is our very own senior editor Robert Zachney. |
0:40.0 | Good evening everybody. |
0:42.0 | We are here to talk about replicants. So you're here to talk about spoiler-filled, fun, thoughtful, hopefully, retrospective, long look back at Blade Runner 2049 a movie that came out just this past month. |
0:57.0 | But we've been waiting to get the free time to chat about. I think we've all been itching to talk about it as big fans of the genre as fans of the original. |
1:07.0 | Are we all fans of the original Blade Runner? |
1:09.0 | Yeah, I think we're pretty diehard. Like I just saw the final cut on Blu-ray the other week. |
1:15.0 | Okay. |
1:16.0 | Well a few weeks ago at this point and was surprised by how much I did in fact like it. |
1:21.0 | It's good. I still like that. |
1:22.0 | It had been a little while and I was a little worried. Right? This was going to be the viewing when the magic dissipated. |
1:28.0 | Yeah, which is always a possibility. And I like a scientist always do my best to hold open the possibility that future experiments will reveal that my past findings are incorrect. |
1:38.0 | That like, hey, my tastes just have changed. I missed something in a film that makes me hate it. |
1:43.0 | You know, and I think it's probably fair to say that there are lots of people who are very complicated feelings about the original film. |
1:50.0 | I certainly do. It's both my favorite movie and also one that I think has a lot of glaring issues. One that's hard to recommend. |
1:58.0 | And I actually wrote about the context of why I love Blade Runner so much the original going into this updated updated this sequel. |
2:10.0 | And why I was so apprehensive about it. But then that movie came out and I saw it. |
2:15.0 | How recently have we all seen Blade Runner 2049? |
2:19.0 | I think it was opening weekend actually. |
2:22.0 | That I saw it. And yeah, just to go on what we said before, I've seen the original two different cuts of the original and two different formats, including Pan and Scan on a CRT. |
