two years, right? I'm Jonathan Lemire on this Monday, January 3rd. We'll start with the news.

There is a lot going on. The highly contagious Omicron variant continues to fuel an unprecedented

surge in this pandemic. According to data from the New York Times, the average number

of new daily infections across the United States has doubled since Christmas Day. We're now at

more than 400,000 new daily cases. Hospitalizations are also rising, and while not at the same pace

as new cases, the sheer number of infections is still enough to strain

hospitals across the country. However, there's encouraging news out of South Africa, where

this strain originated. The government's there says the surge in cases has peaked without

a significant increase in deaths. There are also some new developments in the controversial CDC guidelines that

cut the isolation time in half for those who test positive but weren't showing any symptoms.

There are questions over why the agency does not recommend getting tested before returning to

a normal activity after now, five days. Yesterday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said he supports testing after isolation and expects the CDC

to clarify its new guidelines soon.
