Interesting press conference today over at Florida State, where Michael Alford, FSU's athletic director,

head coach Mike Norvell, and new general manager personnel, John Garrett, had a joint press conference

to kind of talk about this new arrangement that Florida State has been really working on for maybe a month or so, put into place about a week or two ago. And here they are, man, hit the ground running. The portal's running, full speed ahead. Up and running. Guys coming and going, and this is the brain trust now that's leading this organization. So we got to ask a lot of questions about how this is going to work. I don't know that we got great clear answers on all of it, but we can talk about that. Corey, what were your first takeaways from the press conference today? Not a lot of clarity on exactly how it's going to work, but we didn't expect. I mean, I guess it makes sense. So I asked Garrett specifically, like, who does have final say? because in the NFL is most most NFL teams the GM has final say

and the coach just coaches what like who does have final say because in the NFL is most most NFL teams the GM has final say

and the coach just coaches what players the GM gives to give them well I asked Garrett that and he said

well you know Mike Norville has final say because there's an HC next to his name so fair enough

but when you talk about player retention player acquisition building, it does sound like it'll be collaborative. That I don't, I don't think John Garrett just going to say, no, no, damn it, you're going to take this kid whether you want to or not, Mike. That's not how it's going to work, but there needs to be, I think there will be, they both have to agree on it is what Norvel said, right?

Yeah, it was interesting. The way, you know, John Garrett answered the question.

And then when he was done, Mike Norvell didn't like wait for any, the next question. He jumped in there and kind of emphasized the fact that this is going to be a collaborative effort. Yeah. that they worked together in the past.

John Garrett was a scout for offense for Florida State a couple years ago before he went to Duke to be the general manager there.

They obviously have had some success.

Things hadn't been great here the last couple of years. I wonder if Garrett noticed that from Durham. Florida State went in a different direction. But, you know, it sounded like Mike Norvell was trying to let everybody know, listen, this is, I'm not going to be the guy making all the decisions. We are going to work together on this. I don't know that the fan base wants to hear anything other than somebody else is making these decisions because it's gone so poorly these last couple of years. But at the same time, I think like Garrett is saying true, is true to the extent that if you are the head football coach, you're going to have some say.

I mean, I know fans want it to all be taken away. It's not the NFL yet. You know what I mean? It's not the NFL yet. They have not completely taken over that model where the coach just coaches the players. It might not ever get there. We'll see. But, man, when you think about it, if you would, and it makes sense. Like, Alford was asked a couple of times, like, why make this decision? Why do it now? Why restructure? And look, I think there's like 8,000 kids in the portal. Florida State's losing two or three guys a day, signing other guys. And Norvel said he doesn't want to be the guy. It makes sense. No head coach. want to be the guy that's like running negotiations. Like, no, Mandrill, we're going to give you this amount of money.

We're going to give your brother a little bit. That's not what Mike Norbel wants to do, but he wants to have some input on whether they're worth it or not. What are we willing to go when you have to be holistic, really, when it comes to building this roster, how much you're going to be willing to spend on a defensive end or two defensive linemen compared to a quarterback or a wide receiver or three offensive linemen so i think might nortonville can't just hit idly by while john garrett

tells them how that works yeah it's it's going to be fascinating to see how it all plays out but

this is really honestly we're focused on florida state this is kind of happening everywhere that's trying to go this route. I mean, there's not a, this is, you're blowing up really the way the sport is always to work. The way it's always worked has been the head coach kind of has final say until maybe if you had a head coach that's kind of in his later years, Coach Bowden, where Jimbo kind of, Jimbo Fisher took over that role. But when Jimbo was the head coach, he had final say on the roster. You know, and Mike Norvels had that say so long. But it's changing across the country. Like we're seeing it at Oklahoma. We're seeing at Stanford, at Cal, all these other schools that are going to this GM front office route. And they're all going to have to work through this. Because at the end of the day, even if the administration wanted John Garrett to have the final say, the head coach still makes $10 million a year. Right. You know, so there's just, if he says, no, I don't want that kid, what do you do? So they do have to work together and how well they work together is probably going to

determine how well any of this goes. And I thought it was really interesting and true when John Garrett

was asked about, you know, just looking at the portal and he's like, look, everybody's in the portal.

Whether they're in the portal or not, every college football player is in the portal, which is

absolutely true. So you have to, he said that he was going to give moving forward.
