Summary

As war continues in Ukraine, where is the conflict at? Has Russia's increased focus on the Donbas allowed them to make some gains? How strong is the Ukrainian resistance? And why has President Zelenskyy fired his top spy chief and head prosecutor?  Fresh from a trip to Ukraine, Jack Watling, a senior research fellow in land warfare at RUSI, joins Arthur Snell for our latest war update.  We're putting out irregular war bulletins covering different aspects of the Ukraine crisis. You can support our work on the crowdfunding app Patreon: doomsdaywatch.co.uk. Resources to help the Ukrainian people can be found here: https://ukrainewar.carrd.co/  ”On the one hand you have people trying to return to their everyday lives, on the other you hear air raid sirens everyday.”  “The situation in the Donbas is very difficult for the Ukrainians.”  “The Ukrainians are trying to put as much grit in the gears of the Russian war machine as they can.”  “Many senior Ukrainian intelligence officers trained in Russian academies.” DOOMSDAY WATCH was written and presented by Arthur Snell, and produced by Robin Leeburn with Jacob Archbold. And this week we're bringing you a double header.

So stay tuned.

1:11.0

Jack welcome. Thank you for having me.

1:14.0

So Jack as I mentioned you've just traveled there before we go any further. I'd love to hear sort of what your impressions were. I know it's by no means your first visit to Ukraine.

1:23.0

How did it feel and how did it compare with some of your earlier visits?

1:26.0

Somewhat disjointed. So on the one hand you have the shops opening, people going about their lives trying to return to the cities in many cases, particularly in Kiev.

1:38.0

Traffic jams are a feature of life once again. And yet at the same time there is an air raid siren every day.

1:46.0

Sometimes that means a missile is on route to the city that you're in. Sometimes it means it's going somewhere else.

1:53.0

But there is this continual fear and at the same time the number of people who are walking wounded clearly recovering from battlefield injuries is very evident in the street.

2:06.0

Testaments of the fact that while the fighting might not be encompassing all of Ukraine's border at the moment, the threat is there.

2:15.0

And the intensity of the fighting in the Donbass is very, very high.

2:20.0

And so kind of war is all around you and yet there is a strange return normality in much of everyday life.

2:28.0

Yeah. And I guess obviously in Kiev in particular, that must be the case.

2:33.0

But as you mentioned the Donbass there, that's where the war has really been raging for the past few weeks.
