Summary

Whether you run, lift, or ride (and especially if you ride), an otherwise great workout can be wrecked by a painful vulva. And lots of issues can crop up during and beyond the menopause transition that can cause pain, discomfort, and even damage to your vulva and vaginal tissues. We address them all this week with Rochelle Bernstein, MD, of Purely Menopause, who focuses her OB/GYN practice on women’s sexual health and menopausal medicine.

Dr. Rochelle Bernstein is an expert in menopausal medicine and women's sexual health, as well as an avid skier, hiker, and mountain biker. She is a member of The Menopause Society and the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH). She is board certified and is a fellow of the American Congress of OB/Gyn (ACOG) and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL). She established Purely Menopause to empower women with the knowledge, tools, and confidence necessary to lead healthy, happy lives. Hello, Strong Feisty Women.

So, I got a direct message from a member of our community last week, who is an avid cyclist, and she just got herself a beautiful new bike that she was riding the heck out of and really enjoying until she wasn't.

0:46.4

She developed a lot of vaginal pain that she and her doctors can't quite sort out.

0:51.6

So she's going to see a specialist, but she suspects that the root cause was a saddle or bike seat that wasn't quite sort out. So she's going to see a specialist, but she suspects that the root cause

was a saddle or bike seat that wasn't quite right, combined with some untreated atrophy

related to the genitourinary syndrome of menopause. And so I sent her straight to this week's

1:08.5

guest, Dr. Rochelle Bernstein, because as a women's sexual

1:13.6

health and menopause specialist who lives and mountain bikes in Colorado, this is exactly the

1:19.4

kind of situation she sees all the time. And here's the thing. We can all get busy and let

1:26.4

our vaginal and vulvaal health slide,

1:29.4

but it's in our best interest to stay on top of it. Because as most of us know, the hormonal

1:36.3

shifts of menopause can most definitely cause vaginal and vulvaal changes that can lead to pain,

1:47.0

discomfort, and even tissue damage that paves the way for infections. But it's also one of the byproducts of menopause that we can treat

1:52.9

really, really well. We do not have to live in pain, and we don't have to stop riding and doing

1:59.2

the activities we love.

So I am very stoked to bring you this conversation with Rochelle, who started her practice called Purely Menopause to empower women with the knowledge, tools, and confidence necessary

to lead healthy, happy lives, and to have comfortable, healthy vulvas and vaginas. So I really,

really enjoy this conversation and I hope you do as much as I did. All right. Before we get to it,
