Summary

VOXOLOGY Rerun. Two years ago, we had on the incomparable Kaitlyn Schiess to discuss Mike Flanagan's "Midnight Mass," streaming on Netflix. Full SPOILER WARNING, we talk about the whole series. Midnight Mass is a horror show on Netflix that deals with some heavy theological ideas and has a heavy commentary on Christianity and religion. Kaitlyn, Mike and Tim dive in and pick at themes of grace, prayer, communion and more as revealed in the show. It's a fun conversation as we enter into the Halloween season.

As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Always feel free to email in questions to [email protected], and to engage the conversation on Facebook and Instagram.

We're on YouTube (if you're into that kinda thing): VOXOLOGY TV.

An episode we did I think two years ago

0:19.2

Looking at the show Midnight Mass on Netflix by a guy named Mike Flanagan who I've come to

0:29.6

appreciate quite a bit he's got multiple shows on the platform including the

0:35.8

haunting of Hill House the haunting of Blay Manor. Most recently in the fall of the

House of Usher which is a play on the Edgar Allan Poe story as well

0:47.7

as some other movies this show in particular midnight mass is one that we I mean I really really enjoyed

0:57.8

and I think that when we originally

1:04.0

I talked a little bit about how,

1:09.0

you know, as Mike has more than reiterated, I'm a big fan of Halloween, big fan of horror, etc.

1:19.6

And on top of that, I mean, one of the reasons why is that horror was for a long time a medium of commentary on social issues.

1:30.0

So, you know, the first big example of that was Night of the Living Dead, was a commentary

1:39.4

on race. And then to take that to a more current example, Jordan Peel from Key and Peel fame, a little much of comedy on Hulu and other things is he did get out, us, nope. And those are all movies that deal with

1:59.2

social commentary through the lens of horror, how horror the monsters, etc.

2:04.4

Our societal horrors, you know, as well as ways of like reflecting on,

2:11.6

you know, our own worries and insecurities and fears that we have kind of buried

2:16.2

deep inside of us.

2:18.0

And I've always really appreciated that.

2:19.4

Furthermore, when I was studying to get my masters in English, one of my favorite subjects to study was a genre of literature called the grotesque.

2:32.0

And it was a genre that would take something that was both broken and beautiful.

2:40.0

And it was a study of those things.
