Sure, you’ve heard it’s great for your bones, but did you know it might also play a role in cancer and heart health? We’re breaking down the latest research from the VITAL study to find out what’s real and what’s hype.

Wondering how much Vitamin D you really need? And should you be getting it from the sun, supplements, or both? We’ll chat about what counts as a healthy level and how your needs might change as you get older, especially for women. Plus, we’ll give you tips on picking the best supplements out there, since the market is flooded with options.

We’re also answering your burning questions: Is there a best time of day to take Vitamin D? Does wearing sunscreen mess with your levels? And do you really need to take it with food or fat? Whether you’re a sun lover or a shade-seeker, we’ve got you covered.

Welcome back to another episode of the talk. Today we are back with Dr.

0:04.5

Joanne Manson and we are going to talk all about Vitamin D. So, Vitamin D has been

0:10.3

associated with a lot of bone health claims and I was just wondering

0:15.0

according to the vital study what did you guys find about cardiovascular health, bone

0:18.7

health, cancer and everything associated with vitamin D? Just, you know, a couple things.

0:25.0

What we learned from the Vitamin D and Omega 3 trial vital was that we actually need only small to moderate amounts of Vitamin D.

0:37.0

Vitamin D is so crucial to health that we have a lot of ways to conserve vitamin D and to regulate its physiology

0:50.0

and metabolism so that with even small amounts of vitamin D in our systems, the amount that you often get from food, especially in a country that has a fortified food supply, many of the dairy products and

1:06.0

their foods do have a vitamin D added and also from incidental sun exposure because we synthesize vitamin D in the skin.

1:17.0

Most people, irrespective of their blood levels of vitamin D are actually getting enough and the randomized trials of

1:28.0

vitamin D supplementation in usual risk populations have tended to show very little benefit.

1:37.0

In fact, of the supplementation, in fact, in the vital trial trial we didn't see a clear benefit for reducing fracture risk

1:48.8

hip fracture or other fractures. We didn't see a reduction in cardiovascular events. However, we did see two major

2:00.1

benefits. We saw that those who were randomized to Vitamin D, which was 2,000 IUs a day in the

2:09.3

vital trial versus placebo, did have a benefit for advanced cancer, reducing the risk of

2:17.3

developing a metastatic or fatal cancer. This has been seen in some other trials of Vitamin D as well, so I think it's a very real finding in the meta analyses,

2:32.4

a reduction in cancer death has been seen.

2:35.0
