Summary

Imagine getting an anonymous phone call.  The person on the other end tells you that, not only has your work been recognized by group of world recognized artists and innovators, but they are also going to inject your bank account with enough money to change your work and, yes, your life.  That's what happened to Vijay Gupta.  Here's our episode about Vijay's induction into the MacArthur Foundation's Fellows program and the strange history of the so-called "Genius Grant."

Vijay's album "When the Violin..." can be found here.

those things that I've always wanted to talk about on this show, Brandon, because it's always

2:03.6

And people stopped picking up the phone.

2:12.5

So they eventually had to add a callback number so that they could leave messages saying you might want to call us back. And nobody knows who's on this board. It's really mysterious. But essentially, the ward is an

2:20.7

astounding amount of money. It changes every year, obviously, as the endowment enlarges and as

2:26.8

inflation goes on. But it suffice to say, it's enough money to change your life and the work you do.

2:34.0

And on the MacArthur Fellowship website, it explains

2:38.7

it as saying awarding unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary

2:44.6

originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.

2:51.5

And there's no strings attached.
