Racial hoaxes are, as defined by Encyclopedia.com, an instance when someone falsely places blame for a real

or fabricated crime on another person because of that person's race.

Although a person of any race can perpetrate a racial hoax against a person of another race,

the most common racial hoaxes have historically involved white people falsely accusing black

However, we can take a look at one of the most infamous and well-known cases which took place

in Rosewood, Florida in 1923. At that time, Rosewood had a population of about 200 people and aside from one

white family that just ran the general store, every other citizen was black.

On January 1st in nearby Sumner, Florida, a 22-year-old named Fanny Taylor was found covered in bruises, screaming, and claiming a black man had assaulted her.
