Summary

Amjad Masad is the CEO of Replit. Masad joins Big Technology podcast for a frank discussion about vibe coding, or building software via prompt. We discuss all the use cases, whether anyone can do it or whether it's just a tool for already-technical builders, whether vibe coding replaces saas, and what the role of the engineer becomes in the future. Stay tuned for the second half where we discuss whether the AI coding business is sustainable given the costs of delivering the technology. --- Enjoying Big Technology Podcast? Don't go into this thinking you can just have prompt and have an application pop up at the other end,

0:06.0

at least set an afternoon to give it some good effort and try to get like your first app in.

And once you do that, you just get evicted.

I have the stat here that Replit has multiplied by its revenue by 10x in less than six months to 100 million

0:23.4

in annual recurring revenue. Is that growth vibe coding or is that growth AI coding?

0:28.3

Vibcoating. Is AI coding just a hobby or the beginning of a technological revolution

0:33.4

that empowers everyone to build? Our guest today, I'm Jad Masad, the CEO of Replit, has some answers,

0:55.2

coding, which is effectively you write a prompt and then the AI goes ahead and build software

1:01.1

for you. This is something that Replit enables. This is something I've tried. What are some of the

1:06.2

use cases that you're finding people are actually having effective approaches with this. Like, where are the

1:12.4

places where people are doing this well? There's like broadly three use cases. One is personal

1:18.3

life, family life. So, you know, for example, like a lot of people like to do health

1:24.0

tracking. I'm going to track my sleep. I'm going to pull in data from my Fitbit and

1:28.0

going to have the AI sort of process that data and I'm going to have this app on my phone that I

1:33.2

use every day. Or I'm going to build an educational app for my kid to learn math or reading. Or we're

1:40.2

going to have someone built like a chore hero for their family to like,

1:45.0

you know, have an iPad on the wall and like here's who's doing the most chores and

1:50.1

gamifying their family life.

1:52.6

Uh, you'd be surprised how popular this use case is.
