Summary

The US and Russia have met in Saudi Arabia to begin negotiations on ending the Ukraine war. The high level meeting, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, was the first since Moscow's full-scale invasion three years ago.

Also in the programme: Israel pulls out of villages in southern Lebanon as part of its ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, but leaves some hilltop outposts in a move the UN says violates the deal; and as the first legal challenge to an action by the Trump administration reaches the US Supreme Court - will it shift the limits of the president's powers?

Hello and welcome to NewsHour. It's coming to you live from the BBC World Service Studios in central London.

I'm Tim Franks. It looks, if you head to the front page of our BBC News website, it looks just like any other meeting of any top officials in any posh boardroom at pretty much any point in the last,

0:21.2

goodness knows how many years. Men in suits on executive chairs sitting either side of a polished

0:26.0

table. But this is, at the same time, an extraordinary picture because of who the men are,

0:33.0

where they are, and what they're discussing. Marco Rubio, the brand-new U.S. Secretary of State, across that

0:38.9

polished table from Sergei Lavrov, the long-serving Russian foreign minister. They're in the Saudi

0:45.1

capital, Riyadh, and just days after President Trump held his 90-minute phone call with President

0:49.7

Putin, Americans and Russians spent more than four hours discussing at a very senior level

0:55.6

how to bring the war in Ukraine, the war which Russia started with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine

1:02.1

three years ago, how to bring that war to an end. After the talks, the three-man American

1:08.6

delegation led, as I said by Marco Rubio, spoke to reporters.

1:13.3

For three years while this conflict has raged, no one else has been able to bring something

1:16.8

together like what we saw today because Donald Trump is the only leader in the world that can.

1:21.4

So no one is being sidelined here, but President Trump is in a position that he campaigned on

1:25.9

to initiate a process that could bring

1:27.6

about an end of this conflict. And from that could emerge some very positive things for the

1:32.1

United States, for Europe, for Ukraine, for the world. But first it begins by the end of this

1:36.4

conflict. And so the only thing President Trump is trying to do is bring about peace. It's what

1:40.1

he campaigned on. It's something the world should be thanking President Trump for doing.

1:47.7

Traveling with Mr. Rubio is our State Department correspondent Tom Bateman,

1:50.8

and just before we came on air, I caught up with him from Riyat.

1:55.9

What a sea sense has been the outcome of this first such high-level meeting in years?
