Summary

A run of 18 straight Grand Slam quarterfinals came to an end for Andy Murray as Kevin Anderson reached the last 8 of a major tournament for the first time in his career. What did the Telegraph’s tennis correspondent Simon Briggs make of it? He joined the Tennis Podcast’s David Law (a BBC 5 Live commentator) and Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) to reflect on Murray’s exit, discuss the main reasons for it, and whether it will prove a silver lining for Britain’s hopes in next week’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinal against Australia in Glasgow. In a strange turn of events, Britain’s Johanna Konta went out just 20 minutes earlier, but her run was reason for celebration according to our Tennis Podcast team. And what of Venus against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals. Can Venus cause a sensational upset by ending her sister’s calendar Grand Slam dream? Who will the crowd pull for? Catherine, David and Simon preview that and reflect on the rest of a tournament which has been as exhilarating as it...

Hi there, this is Martina Navratelova and you're listening to the tennis podcast.

0:14.3

Well hello and welcome to the tennis podcast on an evening where Andy Murray has gone out of the

0:20.4

US open joint just about 20 minutes earlier by Johanna Conzer, which basically means great Britain

0:26.7

can go home, can't they? Well maybe not, but Simon Briggs and Catherine Whitaker are both here,

0:32.0

Catherine Whitaker from Euro Sports. Simon Briggs, the telegraphs tennis correspondent, we are

0:36.4

brought to you an association with the telegraph, but what a funny old couple of hours we've just had.

0:42.1

In fact, about four hours, 18 minutes in the case of Andy Murray against Kevin Anderson, who has

0:47.7

finally got to a Grand Slam tournament seven times he's tried, seven times he's failed and he's

0:53.5

done it this time, but Simon Briggs, what was your take on what you've just witnessed?

0:56.5

Yeah, Grand Slam, quarter final, he's reached, isn't it? It was a bizarre match in some ways because

1:03.1

we saw two completely different personas from Murray, first two sets very kind of rigid and almost

1:10.0

like he was forcing himself to not react to the situation, then he went down two sets to love and

1:17.9

went completely bananas in his hair when I was still on end and his eyes were spinning and he was

1:22.7

clenching his fist to his box every point, pretty much every point, so it was kind of like to

1:28.8

extremes, I think actually if anything, he needed to find some sort of position in between those two

1:33.8

extremes on the emotional level and he's gone, which is unprecedented in my time of covering him,

1:40.4

he didn't play one slam that I covered in the French Open 2013, but every other slam I've

1:47.5

covered he's gone to the quarter final so a bit of a weird feeling really. I bet it is of course

1:51.7

there's a whole week left of the tournament and no British player in the singles to cover,

1:56.4

still a couple of the doubles players there, Dominic England and Jamie Murray from a British

2:00.2

perspective, what is your take first of all before we talk to Catherine about Andy Murray's

2:04.3

demeanor after the match there? What was your take as to the reasons for his defeat?
