Summary

Wednesday 31st August, 2016 will go down the first day that the roof was employed inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open, as The Tennis Podcast acknowledges in another of our daily shows.

But while the roof made a little piece of history during the Nadal vs. Seppi match, drama came elsewhere. Britain’s Jo Konta collapsed to the ground at the end of the second set of her match with Tsvetana Pironkova and still came through, Milos Raonic also suffered physically and lost, and the poor form of Garbine Muguruza continued - she went out in the night session.

So what happened to Konta? Catherine Whitaker gives an insight into just how debilitating the on-court weather was. The team then attend Konta’s press conference and deliver further details about what led to her ill-health, before assessing her chances of recovery ahead of her match with Belinda Bencic.

The notable wins of Kyle Edmund, Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki are also covered.

BBC Radio 5 live. On what has been a dramatic day here at the US Open a day that really we didn't

0:39.7

expect to be dramatic from a perspective of Johanna Conner of Great Britain who was leading by a set

0:45.8

to love. She was absolutely cruising along and then she collapsed at the end of the second set,

0:51.6

had lengthy treatment and still ended up coming back to win the match. That is just one of many

0:56.8

stories. No that Jockovich today didn't end up having to play a match because his opponent

1:01.2

Eury Vesely was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of a left forearm injury. So a nice

1:07.0

free easy passage for Jockovich through. Nadal still to come will update you on his progress

1:12.2

after that one's done. But first and foremost Catherine Drauma on that court, Kyle Edmund had one.

1:18.6

He came through comfortably and on the same court you had a con to look like she was going to do

1:22.4

the same and then it all started to go horribly wrong. Yeah it's impossible to overstate really

1:29.9

just how challenging the conditions on that court were. It's a weird one because the actual

1:37.1

air temperature today is cooler than it's been on other days. It's by no means cool but it is

1:41.8

and we're standing here now there's a nice breeze, it feels fine. Over there it was not fine,

1:47.2

it was a completely airless court. It's about 85-90% humidity. I was struggling to stand up

1:54.1

just standing there in court side. I was in quite a bad way in all honesty and she was

1:59.7

well both of them were out there trying to play tennis and she was absolutely fine in that first

2:05.2

set but then it hits you with you know it's fluid loss and everything you know you
