You know, I think I want to start, I'd like to ask you a question which would be a fine place to start even

while we're getting a sound check, you, and this is just about you because we all know about Daniel Pearl, the Journalist,

but you are also a Journalist and you tell this really beautiful story in your book about how you,

how the seed was planted for you to become a Journalist with your grandfather in Cuba.

And I just wondered if you'd tell me that story.

Yes, I hadn't seen my grandparents for a long time, if I had ever met them actually, I don't think I

hadn't met them because my mother had left Cuba and hadn't gone back. So when I saw my grandfather,

I was nine and it was a time where they were living in the little house, my grandfather and my

grandmother. And my grandmother talked a lot, she talked too much and she took a lot of space in the

house. And I think my grandfather decided artificially to stop talking altogether.

So it was quite remarkable that it was very strange in it. So he wouldn't talk, he just

wouldn't talk within the frame of the house at least. And so when he went to visit, I was very intrigued

and I thought he was mute and when I found out he wasn't mute, what I decided to do is to wake

up with him because we would wake up before dawn and ask him a question to see whether he would talk

to me. So that's what I did and I woke up and I started asking him a question about his life.

And he answered, but he hadn't talked for a long time. So he was a very raw voice and very deep.

And so and then he took me for a walk and asked him so many questions about his life. And I think

he hadn't talked about his own life for so long forever maybe. So he felt bizarre to tell me

this whole story is granddaughter. But then so that at the end of that day he said you should

become a journalist because you ask good questions. And did that really get you going?

I mean was that was that where you traced the beginning of your work as a journalist?

Yeah, I mean it was a story that remained in my head all the time and I was wondering why he asked
