Summary

Fr. Greg Boyle makes amazingly winsome connections between things like service and delight, compassion and awe. He landed as an idealistic young Jesuit in a gang-heavy neighborhood of Los Angeles three decades ago. Now he heads Homeboy Industries, which employs former gang members in a constellation of businesses from screen printing to a farmers’ market to a bakery. This is not work of helping, he says, but of finding kinship.

On Being was the only show that we were producing and we were one department.

I have been really enjoying On Being for the inspiration of the spark of ideas that it's given me

1:06.5

the insights. It's also the pace of it and the kindness of the conversations that are had,

1:13.2

and the wonder and the joy of it, and sometimes the pain of it as well. I feel quite intimate

1:19.2

listening to it as a podcast, and I believe that if you like something, you should tell them,

1:26.1

and if somebody's doing important work, you should help them. I like what On Being puts

1:32.9

on the airwaves, and I want it to continue, and that doesn't happen by accident.

If On Being's had an impact in your life, please consider supporting us with a financial

making our work possible, and for being a part of our community. I'm Krista Tippett. Up next,

my unedited conversation with Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries. There is a shorter
