Summary

The poet Christian Wiman is giving voice to the hunger and challenge of being religious now. He had a charismatic Texas Christian upbringing, and was later agnostic. He became actively religious again as he found love in his mid 30s, and was diagnosed with cancer. He’s written, “How does one remember God, reach for God, realize God in the midst of one’s life if one is constantly being overwhelmed by that life?” This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode “Christian Wiman — How Does One Remember God?” Find more at onbeing.org.

I'm so happy to have you at the other end of the microphone.

1:28.0

Oh, thanks for having me. I actually thought you were going to be here in the studio today, and realize you're here.

1:34.0

You know, there's a real intimacy to doing it this way, though, which I've come to appreciate.

1:40.0

Yeah. What just what the human voice alone conveys.

1:44.0

And I've done it a lot. I've done it a lot. I've done it a lot.

1:48.0

Yeah. I think it's also, if that's all we have to work with, and then that's also, of course, all that the listener gets. So it's only fair.

2:00.0

Yeah. Yeah.

2:02.0

Actually, you've been on our list for a long, long time, and then after you were on Moyers a few weeks ago, we just had this thunderous demand.

2:12.0

2:18.0

So I'm glad to hear that.

2:20.0

Well, I know your show. I mean, actually, I'll tell you a story. I was in the hospital getting ready for a bone marrow transplant on the fall, and I listened to all.

2:28.0

I've listened to many of your shows, but I listened to all of the shows.

2:33.0

Sort of one after another, because I hadn't had nothing to do.

2:38.0

I was like, I was a captive audience. Oh, wow. Well, but I loved it. You can't get the early years though.
