I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, and I'd like to talk today about the church's new guidelines for biblical translations in English.

Now, obviously, as the church has grown internationally, we have a lot of other translations, and it's been a real blessing.

I think part of the miracle is the timing that this came out right as we're studying the Old Testament,

when King James is hard. We do believe the Bible, but we also believe that it may not be

translated correctly. But I don't want you to think that different translations are going to take

care of that. Much of the problem is the theology of the translations. So when I was first in undergrad, I wanted to learn how to read the Bible and its original languages. So I took my first Greek class and this is my first copy of that book where I began studying the Gospel of John. And then in grad school, I went on and began studying a little bit of Hebrew and a little bit of Arabic. It's difficult.

And the text wasn't that different. And I was very surprised. And so I thought today, I just talk a little bit

about what options are available to us. I'm very grateful for other people who've already addressed

this, but I just got a little bit of a different take on it. First of all, it's not just

the translation. When Joseph talked about that, he said, coming out of the pen of the original

authors, that's not just the problem. The problem is the same words have several different meanings.

Any translation is difficult. That's why the Book of Mormon is so precious to us,

that it came from the mouth and words and ideas of God to a prophet. You know, we were not

cutting out every resource of devil like we have in the Bible right now. But our King James Version

was from an Old Testament text called the Mazzoric text. It was a

Hebrew text that actually was translated from an older text of a Greek Old Testament because we didn't

have the ancient Hebrew text. Our New Testament from the King James was taken from the Textus Recipitus.

But there are thousands of other good Greek and Hebrew translations. And so after we've been

able to have archaeological sensitivities to different translations and different original manuscripts.

We have thousands of Hebrew and Greek manuscripts now available.

And of course, we were so blessed to have the oldest stuff from the Dead Sea Scrolls,
