On this day, 209 years ago, the United States gets its nickname Uncle Sam.

The History Channel records that on September 7th, 1813, the United States gets its nickname Uncle

Sam. The name is linked to Samuel Wilson. He was a meatpacker from Troy, New York, and he

supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the war of 1812.

Now, Wilson, who lived from 1766 to 1854, he stamped the barrels with the U.S. for United States.

But soldiers who began referring to the grub as instead of u s for united states

uncle sams

and the local newspaper picked up on the story and uncle sam

eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for and personification of the U.S. federal government.

In the late 1860s, 1870s, political cartoonist Thomas Nashd began popularizing the image of Uncle Sam.

And he continued to evolve the image, eventually giving Uncle Sam the white beard and the

stars and the stripes and the suit that are associated with the character today.

I think he was the same guy that came up with the Santa Claus figure

and the donkey for Democrats and the elephant for Republicans.

So the guy come up with all kinds of stuff.

And then in September of 1961, the U.S. Congress recognized Samuel Wilson as the progenitor of America's national symbol of Uncle Sam.
