Today, ultra-processed food is making us sick.

Is there anything we can do about it?

On a sticky spring morning in Fortaleza, a city on the north-eastern coast of Brazil,

Saline de Silva pushes a bright white handcart down a rotted dirt road.

Saline is a door-to-door salesperson for Nestle.

The world's largest food and beverage company relies on women like her to reach hundreds of thousands of customers in Brazil's poorest communities.

Places that don't have grocery stores let alone supermarkets.

Saline is proud of the products she sells because they're good for you.

It says so right on the label and rich with vitamins packed with calcium.

But in much smaller print, the labels admit that these products are also loaded with artificial sweeteners, synthetic emulsifiers,

chemically engineered fats.

And as Saline wheels her cart from house to house, dropping off cookies and Kit Katz,

Sugar Lynn, putting cups, many of the adults and children who greet her are overweight.

Saline has been struggling with weight problems for herself.

She's more than 200 pounds and was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure.

She worries it may have something to do with her diet, which is full of Nestle products.

But what choice does she have?

This is the only food that's available.
