A senior U.S. defense official says Ukrainians have managed to push back Russian forces about 34 miles away from Kyiv’s city center even though Russian forces appear to be “digging in” and “establishing defensive positions.” CNN Senior International Correspondent Sam Kiley tells Anderson Cooper what it’s been like in Kyiv in recent hours and says, “things are going relatively well for the Ukrainians at the moment.” Plus, the U.S. government has formally declared Russia’s military has committed war crimes in Ukraine. It remains to be seen, however, whether there will be any accountability for those accused of carrying out the alleged crimes, and whether Russian President Vladimir Putin himself will be forced to bear any responsibility. 0:08.4	It is tangible progress that in some places can be measured literally.
0:12.0	Tonight, according to a senior American defense official, Ukrainian fighters like these
0:15.6	east of Kiev have managed to push Russian troops as many as 22 miles farther from the
0:20.8	city than they were just a day ago.
0:23.2	Just a little more than 12 miles to the east of Kiev yesterday to 34 miles today.
0:29.2	That same senior official says that Russian forces to the northwest have not made any progress

1:05.0	And if true, that is an absolutely staggering number, almost as many fatalities in a month
1:09.8	for the Russians as the worst year for American troops in Vietnam.
