This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Batchel with my friend and colleague, Colonel Jeff

McCuson in United States Army retired, artilleryman. He is CBS News. He is visiting Professor Dickinson

College in the CEO of Diamond Six Leadership and Strategy. This is a puzzle to me, Jeff.

Russia and China are boasting about joint exercises in the Sea of Japan meant to intimidate our

Japanese allies. China at the same time has a broken economy, very sad business for the Chinese

people, but in any event a very bad reports for the Chinese leadership and yet they're deploying

their warships to exercise with an enemy of NATO. It's a puzzle. At the same time we're

in treating China to be our trading partner and to encourage what you'd say was comedy.

China is showing no interest whatsoever in being on the peace side of the equation. How do we

go forward with this, Jeff? Do we just live in two different silos? There's China's

silo and Russia's silo and we ignore them working together? No, we can't ignore them working

together, John, but I think what the Chinese are trying to do is do this balancing act between both

sides. I find, frankly, this ongoing naval exercise to be less than threatening. We're talking to

Russian Corvettes, which are basically small destroyers, hardly in Armada that's going to cause the

Japanese a great deal of concern, but it does demonstrate close cooperation between Russia and

Beijing. And oh, by the way, President Xi just announced that he had invited President Putin to come

to Beijing to visit him in October. But, you know, John, if I'm in Beijing right now, I've got to be

very disturbed about what's going on as miles away in Ukraine. This pergosen mutiny is in many ways

the Chinese biggest nightmare. And that is that the military might rise up against an authoritarian
