Since last we have spoken, Anatole, the general commanding the Ukrainian forces in an interview

and the economist used the word stalemate to describe the front line. I noted at the time when I read the

interview and regarded as generally accurate about what's happened here as

winter approaches and yet it's turned into a political dispute.

Mr. Zelensky has said it's not a stalemate, other voices in Ukraine, but the most striking

to me is that it is now routinely understood in Europe then in the event of a Republican

victory next November the likely nominee Trump will not continue the war in any substantial way and that is

weighing on the considerations of Europe but how so Anatole and this far out I know

it's speculation but I see it in the news well I mean

General's illusioni has simply recognized military reality which is that it is a stalemate and a stalemate perhaps in which time is not

on Ukraine's side given Russia's huge advantages in manpower and to an extent in munitions.

And as you say, the fact that a year or so from now,

US aid may collapse at which point European aid will also collapse.

So people everywhere are beginning to think that it is it is time to try to pursue a ceasefire.

But there are two big problems and the first is the Ukrainian government.

As you say, this statement by Zalujny has led to fierce criticism of him unprecedented by President

Selensky who continues to insist that this is not a ceasefire and that the Ukraine will break through and win a complete victory.
