Jewish community in Ukraine this last year. March of 22, David published a piece in the Wall Street

Journal that identifies the preparations for war times. Since then, we've learned a lot about

what's at risk and what isn't. David, a very good evening too. Thank you for this. Numbers help

to set the scale of this. How many members of the Jewish community in Ukraine have been evacuated

out of the country? How many members of the Jewish community have been internally displaced,

especially were concerned with the east of the country? Good evening to you, David.

Good evening, John. Thank you so much for having me. It's about 30, 35,000 Jews who are

evacuated out of the country in the first months of the war and an equal number that's internally

displaced. And the numbers are shifting always because there are people who in the first months

were evacuated and have since returned. So they go to Berlin, they go to Vienna, very difficult journeys,

long train rides, bus rides that would have taken a few hours, taking a young woman who's telling

me 52 hours on the bus from crossing borders just to reach Berlin and have since returned because

your home is there, your life is there and they're going back. So those are the numbers that we're

looking at about 70,000 Jews altogether that are traveling, going back and forth and not settled.

I learned from your piece in the Wall Street Journal and our conversation that

Rebysch Niersen was born in Ukraine in the city of Mikhailaif. What is there now? Is that under fire?

Nikhailaif is a frontline city, very, very close and it's in the south central part of the country.
