Summary

After one of the most historic upsets in UFC history, I discuss the following on today's episode:

  • Sean Strickland's incredible performance at UFC 293, Israel Adesanya's uncharacteristic showing, and whether I believe Izzy deserves an immediate title fight (00:55)
  • Alexander Volkov's massive win over Tai Tuivasa and how the Russian might fare in a suddenly interesting heavyweight division (20:43)
  • I know Sean O'Malley's next opponent! (32:56)

And of course ... I give you a little history lesson on the BTK killer -- one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history (40:30).

I don't even know the name of that choke. Somebody said it was Ezekiel. Is that true?

0:03.6

That may or may not be true. Ezekiel and Oregon, you go to Whole Foods, it's a kind of bread.

0:08.8

Ezekiel and the Octagon, you get on top. I mean, maybe.

0:19.4

What's happening guys? Happy Tuesday and thank you for joining another special episode of your welcome.

0:25.4

Man, UFC 293, what a great night of fighting. And I gotta say, it didn't turn out like most of us expected.

0:33.4

But I did pull some of you on social media and it's very fair to say that you guys are smarter than me.

0:41.2

More on that later guys, but let's begin with the only place that makes sense because Sean Strickland being a UFC champion is all we need to talk about right now.

0:55.4

Sean Strickland beats Israel Adesonia, how? How is the biggest question, particularly when they're talking about doing a rematch?

1:03.4

Okay, how did you beat him? Now, if I am in Strickland's shoes, the number one thing that I cannot do going into the fight is stand up and trade with Israel Adesonia.

1:14.4

And there's guys in history who have an incredible power that can level a playing field.

1:20.4

I use my own teammate, Dan Henderson, but Dan Henderson had so much power and what later got called the H bomb.

1:26.4

He had so much power that it would make the other guy think there's a lot in striking that's a setup from the foot movements you see to slip it around the jab.

1:37.4

I mean, every boxing coach walks in a gym will tell you that the jab is the most important weapon. The jab, the jab, the jab, the jab.

1:42.4

The jab has never hurt anybody. It's only annoying, but it is really important to measure your opponent, to distract your opponent, to keep something to your opponent's face, to get him from getting his offense going and above everything else so that you can then use an actual power shot that can do something known as your cross.

2:00.4

So I bring this to you because Sean just doesn't have that power. Sean is not one of those guys where you can level the playing field.

2:09.4

In a very rare way that is almost a birthright to certain individuals. He doesn't have that.

2:16.4

So you're then going to go look at the wrestling of Sean, right? If I can't stand up with a guy, then I've got a wrestle with a guy that is always the belief within this sport.

2:24.4

And Sean is an excellent wrestler and he uses that excellent wrestling much like Justin Gachi does for defense.

2:32.4

Justin Gachi has an all-American division one. He doesn't use that wrestling to get on top of somebody. He uses it to make sure somebody doesn't get on top of him.

2:42.4

So if we take that away, there's a third realm and it's the one that nobody speaks about because so few people understand it, but it's not as the clinch.

2:52.4

Now in Thai boxing, the clinch is allowed and even encouraged. But to my understanding, my limited level of research,

3:00.4

Otisanya while training at Thai boxing, Jim's never actually competed in that.
