So at first, Uber was like, hey California, AB 5 doesn't apply to me.

And then they were like, okay California, AB 5's like illegal and stuff, we hate you and we're going to sue.

And then they were like, okay man,

we're going to change our business model a bit,

so drivers can now set their own pricing.

Let's talk about what Uber is doing in response to AB-5.

Right. Well, this is the shit everyone's talking about and here's why.

What is happening in California right now is going to inform the way that independent contractors are able to work in the rest of the

country in the years going forward. It is why companies like Uber and Lyft are spending tens of millions of dollars to fight back on this law.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, we're going to give a brief update of what AB 5 even is, why it's an argument, and then

jump quickly into what Uber is doing now in response to AB 5. I am fascinated watching this all unfold and the reason it's such a battle

is because there are numerous other states contemplating laws like this and the federal government is contemplated and switching to this type of

test for independent contractors. So AB 5 was rushed through the

legislature in California in September,

went into effect January 1st,

and changes the way independent contractors

are classified.
