Summary
This summer hours Friday episode wanders around, starting with some thoughts on the early bracket matches at the U.S. Amateur. Chicago may have a new favorite son, Mike Holmgren’s son is a big boy, Thorbjornsen is a rallying killer, and more on Oakmont. Andy and Brendan then bounce around on some of the early stories from across the tours, hitting on Wyndham, the Women’s Scottish, and the KFT. They discuss the OWGR reforms and also ponder what golf’s answer to MLB’s “Field of Dreams” game would be. J.R. Smith’s attempt to play college golf is also praised. Flashback Friday throws it way back to another U.S. Amateur at Oakmont, the 1925 edition, which featured two members from the same club and one notorious party boy playing in the finals. The episode closes with some quick thoughts on Merion and Oakmont getting USGA championships all the way out to 2050 and what larger impacts that might signal.

| 0:00.0 | Now the shotgun's starting golf is full of mathematics, there's a lot of a lot of setup work that we have to do in order to make a tournament work, so I'm going to demonstrate to you just exactly how we do a shotgun start here. |
| 0:14.0 | And here we go. |
| 0:17.0 | All right, all right, all right. |
| 0:21.0 | Determine! Start your engine! |
| 0:29.0 | Greetings and welcome to a Friday edition of the shotgun start. It is August 13th. Andy, how are we doing? |
| 0:47.0 | I'm hanging in the balance. I'm early Thursday. You just said it was Friday, but we're recording this on early Thursday after late Thursday afternoon, almost nighttime. |
| 1:01.0 | I'm hanging in the balance as Chicago's new upstart, Chicago's new favorite son, David Knifele, is trying to slay the giant in the USA. |
| 1:15.0 | I'm trying to take down Ricky Castillo. He survived a 12 for one playoff to get the last spot. He won the last four holes to win his match in the first round against the medalist. |
| 1:29.0 | And now he's got Castillo on the ropes. He was three up, but now he's back to the tide, all square, with three holes to play. |
| 1:39.0 | The momentum, some folks debate is not real. I think I've positive that it's not real. I think in match play it probably is more than most places, but it does not seem to be on Chicago's son side at the moment. |
| 1:52.0 | I think Castillo and his pukashell necklace are staring down the barrel of that. One got from three down to even tide. I should say, not all squared, but tide with the three holes. |
| 2:02.0 | Not even tide. It's another euro that found his way to Chicago. |
| 2:08.0 | Oscar, our friend from Sweden was getting in my grill about, he was just being polite. He was just asking for a split, shared custody. |
| 2:20.0 | I said, no, no, we got great family lawyers here in Chicago. He's ours except for weekends from October through March. |
| 2:29.0 | You know what I would love to get is someone from Scandinavia, like old David here, their assessment of Chicago's winner. |
| 2:36.0 | He might think you're soft and that you have like that Chicago. He acknowledged that we both have real winter. |
| 2:43.0 | Okay. Oscar does? Oscar McNally. |
| 2:46.0 | Oh, you've, this is, this is a well-ored topic. You've already covered it. I would like to know David, who's been there, been going to school there up in Evanston. |
| 2:55.0 | He's got some cold, cold walks because he's right on that lake and just, you get the blast wind off the lake. They're on Northwestern's campus. |
| 3:05.0 | All right. But this is the event of the week. It's been, you know, mangled a little bit by weather delays, but it's mid-August in western Pennsylvania. |
| 3:14.0 | This happens. I think we've had here in Maryland, thunderstorms, like right at the same time every day, probably about like four. |
| 3:22.0 | It's already in Chicago. It's 98 today, touching 100. But like this is just how things go. Like, I know it's a lot of golf at these, these amateur events, but like they do build in time. |
