I absolutely committed to abolishing the 45 Penns tax rate for the wealthiest people

in the country. Yes. That was Liz Truss, less than 24 hours before the most embarrassing

U-turn in recent political history. Yes, the Conservatives have bowed to pressure from

all sides and are no longer abolishing the top rate of tax. We'll have all the latest developments

and analysis on tonight's show. I'm joined this evening by Aaron Bistani. How are you doing?

Mike London doing very well, very restorative weekend. We get these occasions very rarely in

life, Michael, where everything the Tories touch goes badly. So I wouldn't rather be anywhere else

than discussing that with you tonight. I was having a conversation about this on the weekend,

I was sort of saying it's nice to see it all go, you know, as you say, everything's turning to

shit for the Conservative Party. The response I got was also, there is, you know,

serious worries here. I was going to talk about people's benefits are potentially not going to

rise in line with inflation. We'll talk about the details later. But I suppose my response,

the silver lining is that, you know, for the whole first five years of austerity, the first 10

years of austerity, really, it was really screwing over, say like the bottom third of the population

and everyone else thought, oh, this is great. The Tories are competent. So there are some benefits

of the fact that Tories policy is now screwing over everyone at the same time because then we

can get them out in a year's time when they target their evil can actually be more, more depressing

than when they sort of sprinkled around universally. Also on tonight's show, I'll be speaking to

The government's plan for unfunded tax cuts for the rich spook the markets, outraged the public and

caused cold feet even within the Conservative Party. After a weekend of Liz Trust defending the

decision, this morning quasi-quarting dumped it. He explained the U-turn on the today program.
