This is hell.

The words tyranny and dictatorship have been used to describe the Cuban government's reaction to

protest there. Even those on the left in the US who you would think would be a bit

more hesitant to use those words have applied them to Cuba in an effort to show

objectivity and in opposition to authoritarianism everywhere.

But what do those words really mean when they're used to describe the victims of cruelty

and oppression some of which played a significant role in causing the

protests themselves. For that matter what does democracy mean when it is used so

liberally to describe so many different nations governance

which are far different from one another with varying degrees of actual

democratic rule. It's as if these words almost become meaningless, falling far

short of accurately describing not only how nations rule, but how they relate

to one another.

And when considering those interrelations,

maybe it's best to understand nations not by labels imposed upon them by outsiders

or falsely claimed by the nations themselves, but instead we should

consider them through power relations and how the powerful dominate and
