Luke 12: 35-38 - 'Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 2849 (in 'And lead us not into temptation') - The Holy Spirit constantly seeks to awaken us to keep watch. Finally, this petition takes on all its dramatic meaning in relation to the last temptation of our earthly battle; it asks for final perseverance. "Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake" (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome back to Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast, and we're currently looking at the

0:15.8

Gospel of Luke doing a verse-by-verse exegesis of the scriptures for each day's Catholic Mass. So today we want to look

0:22.7

at Luke chapter 12 verses 35 to 38. Jesus said to his disciples, see that you are dressed for action

0:33.0

and have your lamps lit. Be like men waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast,

0:39.6

ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks.

0:43.4

Happy those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes.

0:47.9

I tell you solemnly, he will put on an apron,

0:51.0

sit them down at table, and wait on them. It may be in the second watch he comes,

0:57.1

or in the third, but happy those servants if he finds them ready. So that's our text for today.

1:05.3

Let's start by thinking about what has happened just prior to this. What is the context? So

1:09.7

Jesus is moving from Galilee to

1:12.0

Judea. He's getting close to the end of his life now. And as he's moving towards Jerusalem,

1:16.6

he's doing ministry along the way and he's speaking to the crowds. He has just been speaking to

1:21.7

the disciples just before this in Luke 12 about living their entire lives directed towards heaven. And you can hear that an exegesis

1:30.0

of those verses, so verse 22 to 35, as a bonus episode of the podcast. So if you want to hear what

1:36.0

comes just before this, that is available to you through the Patreon page. And you can check out

1:41.1

the show notes for that link. So we get to verse 35 today. Jesus is now

1:47.2

continuing the same theme of living your life directed towards heaven and he's going to focus

1:52.1

particularly on telling his disciples to be ready for his coming at the final judgment.

1:58.7

The cultural context is going to be important here because he's going to jump straight

2:02.9

into talking about weddings.

2:04.7

Now, in that culture, weddings were very important and they were quite elaborate.
