Starting with King County has banned new or expanded detention facilities. The council voted today to impose a one-year emergency moratorium on detention centers.

This comes as the federal government looks to build more immigration lockups across the country.

Councilmember Teresa Moskata introduced the measure and described these jails as destructive to the community.

The sheer presence of these detention facilities, the increased

presence of ICE agents, they carry serious consequences for the health and safety of the

surrounding neighbors. Council members Reagan Dunn and Pete von Reichbauer voted against the ban.

The emergency measure only applies to unincorporated King County. Seattle is working on a similar

ban and other nearby cities have already passed one, including CETAC, Tequila, and Renton.

In a statement to KOWW, an ICE spokesperson, wrote, they have no new detention facilities to announce
