You may mostly be familiar with dire wolves from Game of Thrones, but they're not merely

a figment of George R.R.R. Martins or a mythological creature, dire wolves were real,

Placedocene era predators. Dyer wolves roamed all over the Americas from about 125,000 to 10,000 years ago,

living among saber-toothed tigers, giant sloths, and camels.

They had large teeth specialized for cracking into bones and preyed mostly on large herbivores,

though pretty huge, up to six feet long and weighing an estimated average of 130 pounds versus just 88 pounds for a typical

gray wolf, they weren't quite as big as Martin describes them in the books.

Thousands of dire wolf specimens have been uncovered in the Lebrea tar pits in California,

the most of any mammal found at that site.
