Last week, the L.A. Rams acquired cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs at a time when the chiefs and McDuffie had been unable to work out a long-term deal.

He was entering the fifth year of his first round rookie contract, much like they did four years ago with Tyree Kill, can't get a deal done, although there were other issues with Tyreek, but we can't get a deal done. We're going to trade the guy, and we're going to trust that we can backfill or find somebody in the draft or whatever. The Rams instead, F them picks. Yet again, first round pick, sacrificed to get a player that's going to help the team now.

And unlike they did with Jalen Ramsey, it took them a little while to get Ramsey's deal done after they trade it for him.

They're getting the deal done on the way through the door, as they should.

I am not a fan.

When you got a guy who's due to get paid and you acquire him in trade, you don't do the deal on the way through the door he has more leverage because you've given up stuff to get him now. So you have an even greater reason to keep him. You can't lose him. You gave up. You gave up stuff to get him. Yeah. First round pick. First round pick. Fifth round pick. Fifth round pick and a sixth round pick. Yeah. So, yes, you got it, you got to pay him. And they're going to pay him.

Reportedly, it's a four-year, $124 million extension. It makes him the highest paid cornerback in terms of new money. And this is where having the low-fifth year option helps. We talked last week about how Pro Bowls will jack up a guy's fifth year option.

Well, if it's low, because there is no extension in the NFL, they rip up the contract and they replace it.

He's got a five-year contract now, and it pays out $124 million plus what he was

due to make this year, which is another 12. The lower that number is in the existing money,

the easier it is to have a big new money APY. So it was easier to get the 31 because they were

starting low.

If he had been at 27, if he had been at, you know, whatever the big number, bigger

number would have been, it's harder to make it a new money average because it's a total.

All that matters is the total deal.

But that new money APY is the thing that the

agents will text to the usual suspects who will tweet them a minute apart. It's one minute
