Big Night Tonight, President of the United States addresses a joint session of Congress,

essentially the state of the union.

Of course, he's only been in for a month so he doesn't get to describe the

state of the Union, which is a constitutional speech. The Constitution says, president from time

to time, shall deliver a speech telling us about the state of the union. So it's been called the

state of the union speech. Presidents have delivered it in different ways. Thomas Jefferson, who had a high-pitched, squeaky voice, which he was ashamed of,

never ever delivered a state of the union message.

He had it read by the clerk of the Supreme Court.

He almost never spoke, in fact, at the constitutional, he wasn't at the Constitution

Convention, he was in Paris, but even at the convention

that led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams was the speaker. It was almost

like Moses and Aaron in the Bible. Adams was the great orator, a wonderful voice, deep, deep, sonorous voice. He was all of about

five foot two, but he spoke magnificently, articulately. Brahmin, Boston accent, half of Massachusetts

is named after him. Quincy is named after him, you know, Adam's house at Harvard. So, but Jefferson,
