to deal with the coronavirus, Congress passed the biggest spending bill in history, $2 trillion,

including $350 billion for small businesses under the so-called

Paycheck Protection Program. But guess what? That money's already run out. Many small businesses

that didn't get any health need it badly. So Congress has geared up to put even more money

into the Paycheck Protection Plan.

But is that enough? And what about hospitals? For some answers on where Congress goes next

on the coronavirus, whether or not Congress should return to Washington to vote, and how states

are dealing with a crisis, we turn to one of the leading

Democrats in Congress, former presidential candidate and a rising star in the Democratic Party,

Congressman Eric Swalwell, representing California's 15th Congressional District.

The congressman joined us online from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Oh, thank you. Thanks, Bill, for having me on the podcast. So first of all, let me ask you,

what's the situation today in the Bay Area in California dealing with the coronavirus epidemic?

You know, we have seen this past week about 50 to 75 new cases each day.

And so they're not going up as dramatically as you're seeing all over the country.

We have still fewer than a thousand cases in Alameda County.

I think the correlation is that we were the earliest county in the country to shelter in place.

We've seen, you know, residents follow those rules.

And I think we'll be one of the first ones out of this and will hopefully be an inspiration

to the rest of the country as to, you know, what it takes, the discipline
