Last Friday, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that appeared capable of reaching the United States.

The immediate response from the administration was mixed.

President Trump attacked China for its failure to keep Kim Jong-un in line, and Vice President Pence told reporters that there would be no direct talks.
